Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) and Structural Rehabilitation

Metaphorically, functional rehabilitation is looking at a wagon with square wheels and seeing that if you push it or pull it hard enough, it will move. Structural rehabilitation looks at the same wagon and asks, "how can we make the wheels rounder? How can we support the underlying structure which then increases the potential for function?"

Once the body can move well, then functional approaches such as exercises can be more effective. IMT is used for many conditions to bring balance to all our systems: physical, emotional, energetic. It is helpful with mild brain injuries or concussions, after falls, and chronic pain as well as many other conditions. Joy Seunarine is a practitioner of IMT and certified in structural rehabilitation, having been trained by its developer, Sharon Weiselfish-Giamatteo.

Bodywork/CranioSacral Therapy (CST)

Joy's treatments reflect the wisdom gathered during 30 years of experience and training in cutting edge bodywork therapies. Joy has developed her unique approach to treatments, drawing from Craniosacral Therapy, Integrative Manual Therapy, and Evolutionary Process. Viewing an individual as a whole, Joy's hands are sensitive to the subtle rhythms of the body, which helps identify what is out of balance within you.

Treating you holistically—spiritually, emotionally and physically—this body treatment helps to support and rebalance you on many different levels. Sessions are done on the table, hands-on and fully clothed. Initial assessment provides a baseline, as well as determining a starting point for the treatment. After the session is completed, a further assessment is conducted to determine changes made through the treatment and plans for continuing treatments. Our destination is to meet your goals for a healthier body.

These sessions can be extended to 90 minutes to include bodymind coaching (hyperlink to bodymind coaching)

Information About Services Offered

Hourly Sessions in Person

Working on a massage table with the client fully clothed, Joy begins her assessment by gently touching the feet and progressing upwards to encompass the whole body. Normal rhythms and pulses are palpated along with other diagnostic tools. The aim of the assessment is to determine the primary area of restriction to best address the client's goals. As Joy works, she engages the client in becoming an active participant in their own healing. The pressure used is not more than the weight of a nickel.

Bioenergy Healing with Joy

Time, mobility, distance, and debilitation can make access to care difficult. Perhaps these factors are barriers in your own life. The beauty of this modality is that it can be accessed anywhere in the world, in any state of health, ranging from the terminally ill to someone who has fallen and injured a knee. Bioenergy treatments can be done remotely with minimum involvement of the client, making it ideal for wherever you are on the spectrum of health. It is very effective for relief of pain. The goal is a balancing and normalizing of your energy field. (Under Ontario massage registration this service is not deductible under extended benefit plans.) When you purchase this service you will receive 4 sessions. You can also visit my Bioenergy Healing with Joy website to learn even more.

Art of Therapy Mentoring

Art of Therapy describes the growth to excellence once basic skills are learned. Therapists or lay practitioners wanting to enhance their palpation skills in any of the modalities in which Joy is trained are welcome to discuss mentoring with her. Practitioners who have started training in CranioSacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation or Evolutionary Process and want to improve their skills could benefit from Joy's assistance. Ideally a workshop of three practitioners who work on each other with Joy's guidance is the best growth opportunity. Joy can also work one-on-one to give individualized attention. Please call for further information.

Listen to Your Body Classes

When someone asks you to take a deep breath and tune in to your body, do you have any idea how to do this? The art of paying attention to your body is a teachable skill, worth developing to enable you to calmly move through life and manage stresses. However, there are few places where this is valued or taught. Joy believes that this skill supports developing intuition, improving self-care, and deepening compassion. During the classes, discussions, reflections, and meditations are offered, which allow one to dive deeply into an awareness of one's body. Valuable self-care tools are taught and practiced. Joy's propietary training, Four Steps To Joy, is taught as a self-care guide to bring this work into a daily practice.

Whether you are a beginner or have experience, you will leave with a deeper understanding of what it means to attune to your body; you will be able to clear old patterns; you will leave with insights into yourself. Joy’s expertise is tailoring the session to the participants needs on that day. Therefore, each workshop is unique in supporting each participant to develop a deeper relationship with the body. The fruits of this are growing self-love, self-compassion, and self-acceptance.

Palliative/Elder Care

Joy gained much experience in working for fifteen years with elderly patients at Sunnybrook Veterans Care Facility. The warmth, compassion and care that can be conveyed through gentle touch is deeply appreciated in this population. The simplicity of essential touch can diminish isolation, and open the possibility of a deeper and richer connection to the world. Joy will travel to care facilities or homes within Mississauga and neighbouring communities.

Concussion Project

After witnessing her son sustain a concussion on the Rugby field, Joy sought information and protocols for addressing the effects of concussions. CranioSacral Therapy in combination with other modalities is helpful for promoting recovery to pre-injury states. However, concussions, like all falls and traumatic injuries have a systemic impact on the body. Shock is often a factor in these situations. This means, it is not just the brain that has to recover. Treatments can begin very early after the injury with initial attention being paid to other areas of the body that were involved in the injury. This allows the brain to rest and prepare for the next stage of healing. As treatment progresses, the neck and head are addressed. Treatments can reduce recovery time.
